Kemaman Used Cooking Oil Collection Center
By: Nur Syamimi Izyan Binte Zaini (Malaysia)
Izyan, an 18 year-old girl from Malaysia, set up a used cooking oil collection center in Kemaman, Terengganu. She targeted the residential communities in Kemaman, hoping to provide an avenue for proper waste disposal of used cooking oil. By collecting used cooking oil, Izyan not only hoped to reduce environmental pollution and blockage of sewers, but also to recycle these oils into biodiesel. Through sustained awareness and education efforts, Izyan has slowly but surely convinced her community to dispose cooking oil properly. She hopes to continue engaging the community through organizing activities and competitions related to recycling.
CPA was a very valuable experience for me. Undeniably, it was very hard and difficult to carry out the project initially as I was working alone. However, from the advice of the CPA facilitators, I started to form a strong team, working together with my peers, teachers and community. Also, the structure of CPA allowed me to have a clear vision and mission for my project as well as clear steps, which allowed the project to be successful.
Project bECOme: An Initiative to Reduce Plastic Waste
By: Oan Jia Xuan (Singapore)
After the one-week accelerator programme, Jia Xuan gathered a group of friends aged 17-19 (who are not CPA participants) to form Project bECOme. The team came up with ground-up initiatives and approached corporations and agencies to further their cause of environmentalism and sustainability, with a heavy focus on waste reduction in people's daily lives. They were supported by the National Trade Union Congress, Youth Development Unit. In The Lunchbox Experiment (TLE) they organized, they asked working adults to try using lunchboxes instead of disposables to buy their meals. The team will be doing more TLEs on a larger scale.
I am extremely grateful for CPA as it was CPA that kick-started my real environmental journey. I never thought that I was able to do much as a teenager, but CPA has pushed me to step out of my comfort zone to plan initiatives and fight for my cause on a much larger scale. It has empowered me with a wider network, essential skills and an even more fiery passion. In particular, it has taught me to actively seek support from relevant parties to make my project succeed. My endeavours will not stop with CPA - it is just the beginning.
